Road signs

There are many types of roads signs that apply to both bikes and cars. Some remind us to share the road. Others alert us about a bike crossing up ahead. Signs also tell us when a bike lane begins and when one ends. These signs are helpful to drivers and cyclists alike but sometimes they go unnoticed. Keep your eyes open for signs because when they’re not noticed or followed people can get seriously hurt!

Share the Road signs mean that cars and bikes can use the same road and must abide by the same traffic rules.

May Use Full Lane signs and “sharrows” on the road also

indicate where bikes can share the full road

with cars.

Bike Lane signs often mark the beginning of a bike lane, or remind drivers about one.

End signs warn that

the end of

a bike lane is up ahead. Drivers and cyclists should use caution as cyclists may need to merge onto the road.

Bike and pedestrian crossing signs alert drivers to keep an eye out for cyclists and walkers crossing at an intersection or in the middle of a block.

Bicycle crossing signs warn that there’s a bike crossing up ahead. Cars should slow down and yield for cyclists entering and exiting the road.

3 Feet signs remind cars to give bikes three feet of space on the road. Cyclists should stay on the right and cars should pass bikes on the left, at a reasonable speed.

This set of signs tells cyclists they must use crosswalks to turn left, not the open road.
